Have you ever persuaded your mom/dad or aunt/uncle to tell you the story of how they met? There will be a few “Haw!” and “tchaa’s” before they’ll spill the beans. More often than not, they would have met at some cousin’s wedding, or were friends with the siblings. One common thread in all their stories would be how they used to write letters to each other. It wasn’t a done thing then to meet each other often. Didn’t matter if it was a love/arranged marriage. Courtship usually happened through long letters. If it was love, somewhere there was a sister or best friend who would be the messenger, and if it was arranged, they were lucky enough to have their parents’ approval to exchange letters. Most of them will still have those letters stored somewhere! So Romantic!
Now, it was your turn. Friends would be commissioned to find out everything about the crush, what she likes, or not, if she’s seeing someone. Romance meant passing notes across the class to your latest crush, and finally, you would gather courage to go talk to her. Fake get togethers were planned at best friend’s house as an alibi to go meet the boy :D. A series of secret missed call and wrong number sequences to avoid detection at home and many such inventive recipes that made the entire courtship process so much fun! There were still the love letters hidden in your notebooks :)
All that seemed to change when the Internet happened to us. All of a sudden, communication barriers were non-existent and we went from the long sweet brew of love into the age of like/poke/unfriend! The Internet made it *slightly* easier for you by allowing you to send that innocuous email, a message or a subtle “like” to start making some headway. However, randomly sending messages to people only made you out to be a “fraandship-seeker”.
The Internet also made it *slightly* tougher, you had all these people trying to friend you and you don’t know whom to trust. Facebook helped, you knew exactly who your common friends where and that made it a great way to connect and trust. Soon romance became the ping of an email, the buzz of an SMS or BBM and online chats late into the night, and the sweetest, most romantic messages were locked or saved never to be deleted by mistake :)
Romance persists, mediums change!
