Have you ever persuaded your mom/dad or aunt/uncle to tell you the story of how they met? There will be a few “Haw!” and “tchaa’s” before they’ll spill the beans. More often than not, they would have met at some cousin’s wedding, or were friends with the siblings. One common thread in all their stories would be how they used to write letters to each other. It wasn’t a done thing then to meet each other often. Didn’t matter if it was a love/arranged marriage. Courtship usually happened through long letters. If it was love, somewhere there was a sister or best friend who would be the messenger, and if it was arranged, they were lucky enough to have their parents’ approval to exchange letters. Most of them will still have those letters stored somewhere! So Romantic!

Now, it was your turn. Friends would be commissioned to find out everything about the crush, what she likes, or not, if she’s seeing someone. Romance meant passing notes across the class to your latest crush, and finally, you would gather courage to go talk to her. Fake get togethers were planned at best friend’s house as an alibi to go meet the boy :D. A series of secret missed call and wrong number sequences to avoid detection at home and many such inventive recipes that made the entire courtship process so much fun! There were still the love letters hidden in your notebooks :)

All that seemed to change when the Internet happened to us. All of a sudden, communication barriers were non-existent and we went from the long sweet brew of love into the age of like/poke/unfriend! The Internet made it *slightly* easier for you by allowing you to send that innocuous email, a message or a subtle “like” to start making some headway. However, randomly sending messages to people only made you out to be a “fraandship-seeker”.

The Internet also made it *slightly* tougher, you had all these people trying to friend you and you don’t know whom to trust. Facebook helped, you knew exactly who your common friends where and that made it a great way to connect and trust. Soon romance became the ping of an email, the buzz of an SMS or BBM and online chats late into the night, and the sweetest, most romantic messages were locked or saved never to be deleted by mistake :)

Romance persists, mediums change!

If you haven’t yet heard about this movie, it’s a nice rom-com about finding love online amongst people you know. It does a fun take on the real life scenario where people think they need to fake who they are to find love, when really, all you want is for someone to love you for who you are!

We relate to the concept of “Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge (MFK)” because it’s about finding love online and finding it closer to you than you ever thought. Most of us might have never realized that our soul-mate was so connected to us through our extended social networks. If you just look around you, you will find that so many of your couple friends, knew each other before they got married, the story is as old as time itself!

The icing on the cake was to hear that our favorite singer, Raghu Dixit was providing the musical score for the film and our favorite song of the movie is, “Har Saas Mein”, checkout the video below:

Stay tuned for fun movie give-aways from Youpid and MFK coming your way in the next few days!

As a consumer facing business, Team Youpid often has to answer the quintessential question – Why should I buy your product? Why Youpid? It’s a great question that we get asked very often and get the same pattern of Q & A with our users – here’s usually how this conversation goes…

+ You’re Thinking: Youpid is only for single people. I’m married / already hitched!
BIGGEST mis-conception! Fact: Youpid is for everyone. Youpid is all about matching socially and safely and safety comes from collaborating with a close knit group of friends and family, which is YOU: the married and already hitched folk, we’re talking to you now! :) The fact that you’ve gotten invited to join Youpid by your single friends means that they consider you to be part of their private and trusted social group that they are now looking for to support them to find a match.

Besides, its just GOOD karma to help your friends, isn’t it, so lets start racking up those karma points!

+ You’re Thinking: Why join Youpid? Let me introduce my single friends via email right now.
Sure, that’s the obvious thing to do isn’t it? Umm, not really. We underestimate the power of our sphere of influence and our social reach as only a social network can exploit. When you join Youpid and bring your trusted circle online, you’re causing a ripple effect by allowing your single friends to connect with singles that you know, your friends know, your friends friends know – taking it waaaayy beyond what just an email connect can achieve!

+ You’re Thinking: Youpid is like other matrimonial sites, I’ll just search for anonymous profiles, why invite anybody?
So, this one is easy. Forget matrimonial portals, internet sites and what have you. In real life, you make informed decisions and recommendations form a big part of how we decide to choose one thing over the other, this is true in any sphere of life. Sure, the decision lies with you alone, but getting a OK from a trusted source makes a HUGE difference, life is all about RECOMMENDATIONS!

So, if you’re finding a match for yourself, wouldn’t you feel better if you had a recommendation to make possibly one of the most major decisions in your life? That’s really the key point with Youpid – we harness your social network and help you find a match from singles that are KNOWN to your extended circles. Do you really want to make such a big life decision on a hunch alone?

+ You’re Thinking: Why use Youpid? I’ll use Facebook instead, why YET another social network?
This has got to be the most popular question by far! That’s because its a great question, we live in the time of Facebook and its obvious to ask this question. The answer is surprisingly simple and we find that our users often arrive at the answer themselves. It goes back to how we conduct ourselves in real life. Would you want to scream from the rooftops that you wanted to find a match? Would you randomly approach people you think are single to ask them if they were interested in marriage?

Of course you wouldn’t!

Facebook is a generic social network which makes it akin to shouting from rooftops and approaching seemingly single people for matches! This is where a dedicated matrimonial social network such as Youpid comes in and fills the void. What’s more, it integrates nicely with Facebook, so you can invite friends & family who YOU trust from Facebook to join you on Youpid. Privacy is topmost on our feature list and we would never scream from rooftops on your behalf! Pretty soon, you’ll be able to match-make your single friends right out of Facebook (how cool is that!) with our Youpid application that’s in the works!

Matrimony, as our users resoundingly concur, is a social affair but conducted within closed and trusted social circles. Traditional matrimonial classifieds / websites and social networks such as Facebook are a poor substitute for how we effectively conduct matrimonial searches in real life. Youpid is a manifestation of that social activity, but, online and ready to make matrimonial searches a breeeeeze!

Youpid makes matrimony SAFE. Don’t you want that for your friends & family? It’s about time!

Seen our new look? Check it out!

The first I heard of Digital Vidya Social Media for Business workshop (DVCamp) was through live tweets of their workshops (#DVCamp) and I must say that it felt like a bit of a “gyaan” session. You know, the kinds where the obvious is stated! However, quite a few Twitter savvy people attending it had good things to say about it,so my interest was piqued. So, when I got a chance to attend their recent workshop (as a Twitter partner), I immediately agreed. I HAD to see for myself what was it was that they were doing that was different from so many other so-called social media learn-it-all sessions.

It’s hard to find someone who hasn’t used social sites like Facebook / LinkedIn these days, be it to connect with school friends or colleagues. However, when it comes to using social media for your small business/corporates/brands, most people only know about online advertising, i.e Facebook Ads/Google Adsense. Talk about using Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn to drive business and create brand awareness and people will look at you like you are a scam artist. If you are one of those, read further, this is for you (too)! :)

I firmly believe that the only way to know about Social Media is to be on Social Media and for me, this is where the #DVCamp workshops stood out. Yes, from my perspective, there were elements of “gyaan” to the sessions, presentations on why Social Media is a necessity now and such. However, for the most part, it was an interactive session where all participants got hands on experience with Twitter/Facebook/LinkedIn and got to see the benefits real time. Kapil Nakra (@kapilnakra) and Bhaskar Thakur spent a good amount of time in getting people to actually use the tools. This was the key takeaway for me during my #DVCamp experience and this intersected well with my belief that to know is to use!

All the presentations/ case studies and how-to sessions were very interactive. In fact, there was even discussion around a participant’s company Facebook page, the problems it had and how it could be enriched. LinkedIn Profiles were created, how to identify hooks for your LinkedIn profile, how to go about increasing visibility and credibility on LinkedIn was discussed. Both, the technicalities of creating a Facebook Page/Ad for your brand and the challenge of creating a community for your brand were discussed. All these hands-on workshops added a very unique perspective to go with useful case studies that were presented as well.

They also have an extremely interesting format where the attendees split into groups and compete amongst themselves using Facebook as a petri-dish! Teams start off with a social media strategy session which involves a worksheet! Strange as it may seem, it was a great way to get people to focus on what are their key requirements from Social Media and to detail their engagement strategy for each medium. This was followed by creating groups on Facebook and actually going through the tasks identitified in the worksheet to drive users and engagement on the groups. I think this is a great way for people to really see what kind of questions, contests, content actually gets you more Fans/Likes/Comments/Users. Ultimately, depending on the business space you are trying to get “social” in, this entire excercise helped to identify what drivers one could track to gauge social media campaign effectiveness and what the focus points were.

The workshop I attended had an interesting mix of people with varying degrees of social media exposure, we had the complete newbies (love this tweet! http://twitter.com/amritplaha13/status/17456275411439616 ) to people with casual engagement levels with social media. However, the DV team worked with the entire group and got everyone to take to
it quickly, within the 2 days that I attended, which spoke volumes about the effectiveness of the program!

I polled some of the attendees in the group to gauge why people attended the workshop, this is what the participants had to say;

Founder of “Akar”, a packaging and containers company: “want to learn how social media can help me in the Packaging business… Want to reach out to the B2B industry through Social Media”
Anish Bajaj, Founder of “Marvel Infomedia”, publishing: “trying to understand social media as communiciation is moving rapidly through print to digital”
Amrit Plaha, Marketing, Crosswords Bookstores: “To form a social media strategy”

There were others from traditional marketing backgrounds, Airtel,Lintas, Zee (yes, the TV channel), even a pharmaceutical
company “Mission Vivacare”, that wants to use social media to explore B2C.

And their comments post the workshop;

Amrit Palaha : A must do for those unaware of how social media can be used to leverage brands!
Anish Bajaj: Great Bootcamp, a must for anyone who wants to run a relevant business in the future.

This is a very well structured workshop and the hands-on experience that the participants received with the guidance of the instructors/speakers, is definitely an excellent starting point if you are a business and just starting to get your feet wet with social media or are struggling with how to leverage SM for your business or brand!

Thanks to the DV team (Kapil, Pradeep and Bhaskar) for hosting me for the two days during the workshop!

More information about upcoming DV Camp’s can be found here. You can track SM chatter about DVCamp using #DVCamp.

Team Youpid has been busy listening to your valuable feedback and improving our service as we get deeper into our beta. Its interesting to see our users use the site and react to the features that we’ve debated as a team and “productified”.

We’ve been working on a bunch of features that we will be rolling out shortly that build upon each other and make the matrimony search & connection process easier and more focused than ever. Over the weekend, we launched the first building block of our “Browse By Tags” feature. The concept is simple – assign attributes to all the single friends that are directly connected to you. If you’re a single, you can tag yourself as well. If you don’t like a tag that someone has assigned to you, simple, just edit your tags from the “Edit Profile” page and its gone. Tags show up against your profile in searches and a follow-up release will introduce a search feature around tags as well.

“Geek”, “loves teddy bears”, “talkative”, “photography nut”, “loves working out”, “foodie” – and whatever else you feel describes your friend or you in a nutshell! Tags give our single users a quick snapshot of the personality of the person behind the profile and are a super-quick way to make your profile stand out and give it some flavour!

You can tag your friends when you accept their invitations to connect on Youpid and can always manage tags from your “Edit Profile” screen. Manage your own tags, tag your friends and enrich your network! Do let us know if you have suggestions or feedback about this latest feature in Youpid. Enjoy!

Team Youpid was at the recently concluded edition of Pune Open Coffee Club (POCC), that had organized a session by Chetana Mehta on “How to build a killer startup team”. Team Youpid has a soft spot for Pune since our Engineering team is based out of Pune and we’ve always wanted to plug into the startup scene in Pune having heard and read so much about it.

Chetana touched on many HR best practices drawing from her experience in the Industry so it was educational to hear her talk about her experiences in growing a team and hiring the right kind of talent and nurturing the right kind of culture in your organization. However, as a startup, we felt that the content catered to mid-size companies and over. Regardless, it was fun to interact with Chetana, who has been a colleague of co-founder Akash Saxena way back in the day!

Post the talk, members of the audience talked about Interviewing Hacks that have worked for them in their organizations. Here’s a sampling!

Team Youpid

Know what you’re looking for

Separate personnel requirements into workers / thinkers

Thinkers are harder to find, search at startup events/forums, if you’re plugged into the ecosystem, you might be more open to being in a startup is our rationale.

Workers are important as well, work needs to get done and founders can do only so many things!

Workers can be groomed into thinkers with proper inputs occasionally

@ngkabra via Nikhil Jakatdar (in a prev OCC Event)

Nikhil distills his hiring process into 5 steps

Step 1:

Sell the company with passion, then de-sell, be up-front about risks & everything bad that could happen.
Rationale: Open up all the risks and the wins, will help the candidate see past the romanticism. If the candidate calls you back after this stage, they are more likely to be interested and will stick with you through the bad times as well.

Step 2: Regular Tech Screen

Rationale: Well!

Step 3: Stress Test

Call candidate over and have an interaction with a set of people. Bring Pressure.
Rationale: Shows you how a candidate reacts to pressure, important in a startup environment

Step 4: Meet the Team.

Rationale: During the interview process, only a couple of people interact with the candidate, let the team meet the incoming candidate and ask team if they spot any red flags or spot dyanmics issues.

Step 5: Offer

Make two offers, one high on cash, the other high on equity. If the candidate picks the cash-heavy offer, its probably not working out!
Rationale: Startups are strapped for cash. If your candidate is looking for money, might not be with you through your journey when things are rough.

There were some other fun hacks like @sandeepsaxena from Acton Biotech talking about how an unconventional method of reaching out to his massive contacts list bore more fruit by way of qualified job candidates v/s a dedicated recruitment drive!

Building a team around the core of the founders is a hard task indeed, in such a small team a small mistake can make a big difference, so was educational to hear how other entrepreneurs dealt with this issue. Ultimately, Nikhil’s method touched many of the sentiments that Team Youpid also holds close – though long drawn – its a process that ultimately might have the highest chance of yielding a “hit”!

The post event networking was gold, with Team Youpid finding common connections with fellow Pune based entrepreneurs like @sdawara of Dubzer and meeting all round interesting folk! Ultimately, such events are about exchanging ideas and sharing experiences with fellow entrepreneurs. This event was great on both counts!

Have interesting interviewing hacks? Do comment and share!

The beta is going well and we’re getting a lot of valuable feedback from YOU, our users that we’re incorporating into our product. As a young startup we’re learning lessons that we founders are calling our own personal MBA! :)

Thanks to Youpid and our involvement with the vibrant startup community via Startup Saturday and Twitter, we’re meeting interesting people who contribute to evolving our Youpid journey in one way or the other. We’re thankful to Shyam (@kamadoll) who got us in touch with the folks at Microsoft India Bizspark and Youpid is now a proud member of the Bizspark program in India! Thanks Shyam!

The Bizspark program allows startup access to technical events, software at discounted rates and much more. The condition is that you should be using Microsoft technologies in your venture. Check out their website here for more details.

As a young startup, software licensing and hosting costs can add up and a program like Bizspark definitely goes a long way in watching that bottom line!

Team Youpid is just back from a fanstastic outing at the ITsAP & Headstart conference of 2010 in Hyderabad! Thank you Hyderabad for all your love and support.

Youpid.in was nominated to be part of the demo pit at the event and we got an excellent platform to spread the word and interface with our users. This was a first for us where we had an opportunity to put up a stall for Youpid and the response was simply fantastic. The challenge to spread the word about Youpid in an environment full of other exiciting ventures was unique and we had a blast while we were at it!

Team Youpid was wearing traditional Indian wedding turbans and all the visitors at our stall joined in the fun and got their pictures taken wearing the turbans too. It was fantastic to see everyone happily don the Youpid turban and join us in the festivities!

Here are the @Headstarters !

Some fun takeaways from the day were when we turned reporters and clicked turban’ed pictures of photo journalists who had come to take our pictures.

We almost turned offline match-makers as we connected two visitors to our booth, one had a son who wanted to get married and the other who had a friend’s daughter trying to find someone she might be interested in. All this while they together acknowledged the need that Youpid.in fills!

We even had someone asking to take the turban away as a keepsake!

It was great to see the overwhelming response that Youpid got, every person at the booth loved the concept and agreed with Youpid’s approach towards online matrimony! Singles were interested in finding singles through their friends! We had parents, sisters , brothers and relatives stop by and have an “aha” moment where they each realized how they could use Youpid to make a difference to somone in their lives who was going through the matrimonial process.

We were on our toes all day and were happy to meet our users and fellow entrepreneurs. Thank you for your warm reception Hyderabad and many thanks to Headstart and ITsAP for giving Youpid this fanstastic platform to demonstrate our product and also connect with so many wonderful people!

To share with you the craziness and fun that was Hyderabad, come check out the pictures of the people who visited our booth
