Youpid.in is hiring. We’ve been going through resumes and taking interviews. Interviews whether or not they lead to actual job hires, show you what kind of talent exists in the industry. There is definitely talent, specially if you look at the resumes, people have done a lot of varied projects. However, most are not able to bring that out in the interviews.

Want to share a couple of quick tips that are in my mind right now. I think these help the candidate and interviewer too. The tips are loosely from a Startup job perspective.

  • Before the interview, look up the company online. All companies have an online presence. Read their blogs. Get an idea of what the company does. If its a website, join it, see what its about. Shows the interviewer that you’ve done your homework and that you are interested in the company’s concept/idea.
  • For any question, always refer to your previous projects from the resume as examples and answer. Shows that you have real world experience rather than technical book knowledge.
  • If you don’t have a real world example, then refer to your technical knowledge and say so. Interviewers appreciate that though you’ve not worked on a particular issue, you are aware of it.
  • If you don’t know the technical answer but have a general idea, think aloud, shows the interviewer your thought process and how you would go about tackling an issue that is new to you.
  • If you still don’t know the answer, be honest and say so. No one knows everything.
  • Ask questions about your job profile. What all does it involve, the technical perspective, the team. Shows that you are interested in being part of the team or the technology.
  • If you’ve followed Tip #1, tell them how you can be part of the company and make a difference.
  • This should actually be Tip #1, don’t send in a PHP resume for a ASP.Net job, unless accompanied by a cover letter explaining why you can be the right person for the job regardless of the technology difference. Just sending resumes to all jobs really does nothing for you.
  • Show control on the interview, if at any point you see the interviewer getting disinterested, don’t just let it be. Talk about technical stuff that you have learnt by yourself and not through your job. It tells the interviewer that you have drive and you are keen to go over and beyond a paycheck, shows initiative, shows hunger.
  • Be clear about why you are changing your job. Is it for money? Is it for better work? Is it for a better title? “Better growth opportunities” is very generic, unless you can be specific about growth in what.

What do you think? Do you agree, disagree, have any other tips that you would like to add?

I guess the reason they sent you a php resume is because of the way the job post was worded

    + Years Experience. C#/ Databases (any)/ASP.NET 2.0 and above. HTML / CSS / GUI Design. PHP/Joomla/Flash experience a plus.

    C#/ Databases/ASP.NET 2.0 and above.
HTML / CSS / GUI Design.
    PHP/Joomla/Flash experience a plus.

the a plus is not being read by them . And also why would a company need both php and asp.net?
If the platform is asp.net why even add php, joomla

      @Peter
My advice to the candidates is to read the entire job description and apply. A lot of times candidates read the title and apply. That does not help the candidate nor the interviewer.
As for the platform being ASP.Net and PHP being a plus. A company can have requirements that involve lot of technologies.

I have no idea how I landed here. But good advice there Ruchika. I’d think something else helpful would be, for the interviewee, to talk to people who are in the company and in their contacts or to get in touch with people who left the company to get a full picture before drawing conclusions for that last point.

Tips from a fresh grad :D

    1. Check the job profile/role and be sure if you really need to apply for that particular job. Only for the reason that you are in hunt for a job, doesn’t make sense you need to apply to ANY job that comes in the way of browsing. Do not bother to apply for a job if you think your capabilities are much more worth than the job requires :P

    2. There are very good chances that you can end up with lack of interest in job if #1 is ignored.

    3. Remember that you need a job and an interviewer needs a candidate for the company. It should always be a “win-win” situation. Just that you didn’t clear an interview, doesn’t mean that you are unfit. Be optimistic and speak “realistic” in the interview. Do not oversell during interview process.

    4. In my graduation, I was taught to speak some “strengths” in the interview that I actually do not possess :P Get rid of that so called “interview skills”. How can patience be my strength if I cannot wait for a web-page to load, for the red signal to turn green?

    5. Do not fill in your resume with all the technical skills you have.I personally do not like resumes that have C, C++, java, core java, advanced java, supersonic java; .net 3,4,5, million; MySql, php 3,4,5; html 4,5; MS office 96,00,03,07,10(alpha, beta, gamma), OS – X, leapord, linux, MS 00, 00 server, Xp, vista, 07, whatever.

Garbage. Right!? Even if you are master of all trades, show your expertise in the field the job is opened for. Customize your resume accordingly.

    6. Be clear, precise, passionate, honest and be confident.

    7. Trust me, 7 among 10 resumes of my friend’s’ I have seen have the same “Career Objective”. All are just out of college.
“To seek a position to utilize my skills in a MNC that offers professional growth while being resourceful, innovative and flexible”. OR anything much similar to this.
    Duhh.!

    8. Smile, Greet – Thank, Smile :)
